Mango (Mangifera indica)

Mangos are grown in tropical climates all over the world. The mangos mostly come from Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala and Haiti. Fortunately for us, these countries harvest their mango crops at different times of the year, which means we get to enjoy mangos all year round.

The tree is evergreen, often reaching 15–18 metres (50–60 feet) in height and attaining great age. The simple leaves are lanceolate, up to 30 cm (12 inches) long. The flowers—small, pinkish, and fragrant—are borne in large terminal panicles (loose clusters). Some have both stamens and pistils, while others have stamens only. The fruit varies greatly in size and character. Its form is oval, round, heart-shaped, kidney-shaped, or long and slender. The smallest mangoes are no larger than plums, while others may weigh 1.8 to 2.3 kg (4 to 5 pounds). Some varieties are vividly coloured with shades of red and yellow, while others are dull green. The single large seed is flattened, and the flesh that surrounds it is yellow to orange in colour, juicy, and of distinctive sweet-spicy flavour.

The mango is a member of the drupe family. This is a type of plant food with a fleshy outer section that surrounds a shell, or pit. This pit contains a seed. Olives, dates, and coconuts are also part of this family.  There are many different kinds of mango. They vary in color, shape, flavor, and seed size. Although mango skin can be green, red, yellow, or orange, its inner flesh is mostly golden yellow.

Mango, (Mangifera indica), member of the cashew family (Anacardiaceae) and one of the most important and widely cultivated fruits of the tropical world. The mango tree is considered indigenous to eastern Asia, Myanmar (Burma), and Assam state of India. Mangoes are a rich source of vitamins A, C, and D.

The fruit of the mango tree is juicy and has an excellent taste. The tree comes from the tropics of Asia. It is easily cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. Ecuador's climate is beneficial for the cultivation of mango and produces about 30,000 tons per year. The deep red color, which is distinctive of the 'Tommy Atkins' mango variety is highly appreciated by North American consumers. Ecuador, who produces mangos of this variety is amongst the main suppliers for this market. Because the Ecuadorian fruit export sector is well aware of this, they are committed to continuing to consolidate their position among consumers in the USA, Canada and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. The mango crop covers an area of approximately 7.700 hectares, with the following exportable varieties: Tommy Atkins (65%), Haden, Kent and Keitt available from October to January.
